The batons are spaced to let in a gentle light, and a four-inch gap between the timber and the exterior façade creates a play of shadows similar to the ones cast by trees.

In response to a brief that asked for privacy and solitude, plus a connection to outdoors, architect Casey Hughes chose to clad this writer’s studio in North Hollywood with a screen made of narrow batons of red cedar (untreated, it will turn a soft grey color over time). The batons are spaced to let in a gentle light, and a four-inch gap between the timber and the exterior façade creates a play of shadows similar to the ones cast by trees. Casey Hughes also carved an atrium in to the north façade that forms a sheltered balcony; enclosed by glass, it acts as a light well and provides a sunny spot for morning coffee.
